The Power of Change

Today at around noon I took a walk around town. I'm not on Orcas and I'm not where you could even think of the place that I'm located. I took a walk around the downtown of Las Vegas. Vegas Baby!
Except where I am has about a population of 50 people and barely qualifies as a town. I'm in Las Vegas, New Mexico. This place is a five minute drive from a home of 208 kids from 77 different countries. I'm talking about the United World College of the United States. I won't talk about my experience on meeting these students and hearing their stories. I'm going to talk about the town.
Downtown Las Vegas, New Mexico
My Dad and I thought that if we picked the most random place and the world we would end up here. The town is not much more than a couple of stores and roads. If you've ever seen the movie Cars its like that town only Las Vegas, New Mexico has history to it. This town was the one of the most frequently traveled trading posts while on the Santa Fe trail. The Santa Fe trail was like the Lewis and Clark trail but not as glorified. The main road through town was actually the Santa Fe trail.
This town has some of the richest history in the West but is one of the most abandoned towns I've ever seen. Why? The power of change. There is a Walmart about 10 minutes from here and now all the jobs and joy in this town has just left. Don't take this the wrong way, progress is great, and I know that I couldn't survive without Costco. Progress is good but we always have to remember the little things. For example besides this town, we get a new, better video game or doll and just ignore the other one. We need to remember the smaller things of life and not just use the bigger and better ones.
Why do you think God creates thorns on Roses and cripples? He creates them because He needs us to comfort and help them and not just ignore them.
